It all started on Wednesday, 2nd February 2022. I was posted to Sokoto for NYSC camp, but I had planned to be a “ghost Corper” since I lived in Kebbi, just two hours away. My plan was to only show up for clearances and return home. I was posted to Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto, for my PPA with my friend Firdausi.
After documentation, we were to choose a CDS group. Firdausi picked Freedom of Information Vanguard (FOIV) because it was close to the Corper’s lodge and advised me to do the same, so I did. I still wanted to relocate to Kebbi, but Firdausi encouraged me to attend CDS at least a few times to know how things worked. One Wednesday, we trekked to the CDS venue at Bado Quarters. I arrived late.
As I entered, I saw her—Saudat. A calm, beautiful young lady. I froze thinking, “If she agrees to date me, I’ll marry her after NYSC,” but another thought said, “Forget it, girls this fine here are probably married already.” Throughout the meeting, I kept staring at her and even sneakily took a short video and pictures of her.
It was love at first sight. After the meeting, I asked Firdausi when CDS usually holds. She said weekly. I cancelled my trip back to Kebbi just to keep seeing her. Sadly, she didn’t attend the next week, but I kept coming. From February to May, I admired her from afar. In May, I was nominated and voted as CDS President, and interestingly, she voted for me.
As President, I tried to get her attention—sitting opposite her, answering questions, trying to stand out—but she didn’t notice me.
One day, we came for state allowance clearance. I saw her outside the secretariat. We greeted, and I quickly asked for her number. I knew she wouldn’t refuse the CDS President. That’s how I began making my move.
We officially started dating in July but broke up in October after her POP. She was Batch C1, I was C2. We reconnected in January 2023, got engaged in August, and married in May 2024.
I didn’t just go to Sokoto for NYSC — I left with a certificate and a wife. By this I count myself as the most successful Corps member in Sokoto in 2022.
Today, we are happily married. Long live NYSC, long live Nigeria.
