I met my husband-to-be at Asaya Camp, Kogi State, during the 2023 Batch A Stream 1 NYSC. We were both in the camp band, where he was one of the leaders. At the time, I was in a serious relationship and it was my ex-boyfriend who encouraged me to join the band to avoid parade stress.
From the moment we met, my fiancΓ©—then a stranger—would jokingly call me his wife, which irritated me because I was deeply in love with my boyfriend. He would even ask for my parents' number, that he would be the one to marry me. This continued throughout the 21-day camp, but I dismissed him.
After camp, I returned to my state and my relationship ended mysteriously. Days after the breakup, I found myself wanting to talk to someone and his name came to mind. I called him & we had a long conversation. He had redeployed and after that call, I forgot about him. I later returned to Kogi State after my failed redeployment.
Months passed, and he resumed calling me daily, checking in and offering encouragement. At the time, I was the NCCF Prayer Secretary & Assistant Sister Coordinator and our conversations often revolved around my duties. One day, he reminded me of his words from camp but I told him I wasn’t interested. Still, he never stopped reaching out.
Towards the end of my service year, I went home, and he visited. I invited him to my brother’s wedding where my family & friends took an instant liking to him. He insisted on meeting my parents & to my surprise they liked him too but I made it clear that we were just friends.
As my service year neared its end, he asked again & this time, I quoted a NCCF rule that executives who were single before assuming office couldn’t start a new relationship until they hand over. He respected it but kept calling. One day, I decided to pray about it, confided in my pastor and sought confirmation.
When I had my answer, I didn’t tell him immediately. I waited until I completed NYSC and returned home before finally saying YES. Since then, our journey has been smooth.
We’ve been together for over a year, got engaged in November 2024 and will marry in June 2025. He is everything I prayed for, my happy place & I love him deeply.
