My husband and I met in Niger State in 2009. He graduated from Delta State University, Abraka, and arrived at camp early. I graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Unlike him, I got camp late in the afternoon and wasn’t able to complete my registration that day but secured hostel accommodation that night. The next day, after morning drills, I finished my registration where we first met. He was among the corps members assisting the new arrivals. We discovered we were in the same platoon— the great Platoon 8 😃 —and from the same state, Delta State. However, I was born and raised in the north, while he had lived all his life in the south. We would walk together to morning drills and head to Mami Market with friends before resting at the hostel. What began as friendship during camp grew into feelings over the three weeks of orientation.
