It was October 5, 2018 at BELLS University, Ota — both of us corpers, navigating NYSC life with youthful zeal & jollof-induced optimism. I worked in the Vice Chancellor’s office. She was stationed in the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s office. That day, I was sent on a casual errand to deliver a document… only to find a corper on duty catching sweet sleep. That moment — innocent and amusing — became the spark.
From professional run-ins to lingering after hours just to be around each other, our connection grew like a slow-burning fire. There was no pressure. Just presence.
I completed my service year and moved to Ibadan for postgraduate studies while working. She remained in Ota, finishing her NYSC. The distance tested us but somehow stretched our hearts wider. She later came to Ibadan for her MSc, combining work and the processing of relocation — all while we continued nurturing what we believed was heaven’s pairing.
In 2021, she relocated to the UK to further her studies. It was tough — long video calls, dropped Wi-Fi, time zone mismatches and the ache of missing moments. But we stayed planted.
2022: I got a job in the UK and relocated to join her. She settled in Sheffield, I made my home in Leeds and just like Ota days, we journeyed back and forth. Late-night trains became our new danfo rides. Shift patterns became our new office hours. But nothing could delay destiny.
On June 5, 2024, beneath the Moroccan skies of Marrakech, I asked the question we both already knew the answer to.
June 29, 2024: We held our virtual introduction — two souls beaming through screens, families joining from continents apart.
July 5, 2025: We said “I do” in Ibadan — the city that gave roots to our love.
The wedding? Glamorous. Colorful. Nigerian to the bone. Yoruba drums, flowing agbadas, ululations and God’s unmistakable presence.
Today, we look back at that fateful mail delivery from VC to DVC and the corper it led me to. The school’s motto rings louder now than ever - “Only the best is good for BELLS.” and BELLS gave me my best.
This isn’t just our story — it’s a reminder that when love is anchored in purpose, even NYSC postings become divine arrangements.
