How we met on the hills of Jigawa

Some stories are written by fate, others by choice. Ours? A mix of both, with humor and divine intervention. It all began during NYSC Batch A, 2015 in Dutse, Jigawa.

We first met during a famously long NYSC clearance. While registering for U-report (24453), I needed 2 more numbers to complete my list. Everyone else hoarded theirs, but she showed up out of nowhere and gave me hers. That small act of kindness stuck with me.

Coincidentally, we lived in the same area. Naturally, we started seeing more of each other—walking home after clearances and engagements. She was fun to talk to, but I was engaged, so our bond was strictly platonic.

We became prayer partners. She often joked her top prayer requests were for a good husband and her fashion business to thrive. As a good friend, I prayed along. She also suggested I learn sewing—“You never know when it might help,” she said. I laughed but gave it a shot. Learning to sew was tougher than any NYSC CDS, but she was patient. Little did I know it would become a lifesaver after NYSC.

Fast forward to life after NYSC. My engagement ended (yes, I got served "international breakfast"). During my heartbreak, I thought about her—my prayer partner, my sewing tutor, my friend. Could I be the answer to our NYSC prayers?

I called her and said, "What if I told you I’m the husband we prayed for?" She laughed, “You can’t be serious!” But I was. So began my "boys’ campaign"—sweet notes and reminders of our bond.

Eventually, she said yes. We got married in October, and now, 6 amazing years later, we’re blessed with 2 wonderful kids.

She still teases me about that call, saying, “Imagine if I’d laughed you off completely!” I tease her back, reminding her that her sewing lessons helped sustain us during tough times.

Looking back at our NYSC photos, mountain hikes, and wedding pictures, I marvel at how far we’ve come. She’s not just my wife—she’s my encourager, teacher, and the love of my life.

Here’s to many more adventures and someday telling our kids how a simple NYSC connection became a lifetime of love.

How I 'dramatically' met my wife in NYSC Sokoto

It all started on Wednesday, 2nd February 2022. I was posted to Sokoto for NYSC camp, but I had planned to be a “ghost Corper” since I lived in Kebbi, just two hours away. My plan was to only show up for clearances and return home. I was posted to Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto, for my PPA with my friend Firdausi.  After documentation, we were to choose a CDS group. Firdausi picked Freedom of Information Vanguard (FOIV) because it was close to the Corper’s lodge and advised me to do the same, so I did. I still wanted to relocate to Kebbi, but Firdausi encouraged me to attend CDS at least a few times to know how things worked. One Wednesday, we trekked to the CDS venue at Bado Quarters. I arrived late.  As I entered, I saw her—Saudat. A calm, beautiful young lady. I froze thinking, “If she agrees to date me, I’ll marry her after NYSC,” but another thought said, “Forget it, girls this fine here are probably married already.” Throughout the meeting, I k...

The beautiful NYSC love story of Mr and Mrs Enujeke 😍😍😍

My husband and I met in Niger State in 2009. He graduated from Delta State University, Abraka, and arrived at camp early. I graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Unlike him, I got camp late in the afternoon and wasn’t able to complete my registration that day but secured hostel accommodation that night. The next day, after morning drills, I finished my registration where we first met. He was among the corps members assisting the new arrivals. We discovered we were in the same platoon— the great Platoon 8 😃 —and from the same state, Delta State. However, I was born and raised in the north, while he had lived all his life in the south. We would walk together to morning drills and head to Mami Market with friends before resting at the hostel. What began as friendship during camp grew into feelings over the three weeks of orientation. When PPA postings were announced, he was assigned to COE in Minna, while I was posted to Bosso LG Secretariat. Despite being in different LGAs...

How we found love in NYSC Benue - Rafiah and Yusuff

Ride with me back to January 2017, NYSC called and we were posted to Benue. A few days after camp started, a friend who had met us individually said to Sodiq he found a lady from Ibadan who could be his match for ‘bad mouth’ and he asked to meet. Thankfully, we were in same Platoon 10 so it was easier for him to introduce us. Some bants here and there, well you should know who won. Fast forward to January 31, 2017, we happened to sit next to each other during SAED class and his phone gallery scroll revealed we have a mutual friend and that kicked off endless hours of talks and bants. While people were running away from SAED, we turned it to our rendezvous to nurture our friendship. Unfortunately, Sodiq got posted to Vandeikya LG while I got posted to Apa LG. I remember we asked one of the vendors in Maami market how far the two locations are to each other and the guy laughed at us for not sticking to the ‘don’t fall in love in camp’ mantra. Technically, we were just trying to nurture o...
